'Vikings' season 4 news and updates: Clive Standen says his character will be a different person
The midseason finale of "Vikings" season 4 was proof of why it is one of the most well-written and executed TV shows these days. It's also the most creative, introducing a major time jump just before the hour ended. But with an old and battered Ragnar receiving a frosty reception in Kattegat and Bjorn about to sail in search of the Mediterranean, what can fans expect when "Vikings" resumes the season?
Episode 10 of "Vikings" season 4 unveiled the much-awaited showdown between Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and his brother Rollo (Clive Standen). Unfortunately for those rooting for the Viking King, Rollo outsmarted and outfought his brother. The episode also introduced a time jump that introduced Ragnar's sons all grown-up. It was also revealed that he left after his defeat in Paris and had not been seen in years.
When "Vikings" returns to continue the season later this year, fans should expect to see the series focus more on Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) and his brothers. Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) will reportedly stand out and play a big part in the second half of the season, something that was clearly hinted at a recently released trailer.
The trailer starts with Ivar seemingly tied to a mast and in danger of drowning. Ragnar tells him that "one day, people will know and fear Ivar the Boneless." And Ivar indeed looks fearsome in the quick glimpses that fans are given of the Viking in battle. The clip also shows Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) saying that he no longer knows who he is and Rollo admitting to Gisla (Morgane Polanski) that some part of him is still a Viking.
Fans of Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) will no doubt be relieved to see her still alive, as she says there can only be one queen of Kattegat. However, it appears Auslag (Alyssa Sutherland) won't give up whatever power she has as she claims that she is the queen. A fierce battle between the Vikings and King Ecbert's (Linus Roache) army is also shown, with Bjorn standing in the front lines with his brothers. The clip ends with a shot of Ivar, walking with the use of crutches.
It's been said that Ragnar favors Ivar among his sons. For despite being a cripple, the young man has a keen mind that Ragnar believes can overcome anything. But even if Ivar is his father's favorite, it's Bjorn who will be the new leader.
Luckily, it seems that there's no rivalry among Ragnar's sons, as Bjorn reportedly loves all his brothers and just wants to protect them. As for Ragnar and Rollo, it's unlikely that the two brothers will face off in battle again.
What's guaranteed is that when the show returns, the years would have changed all the characters. For instance, Standen explained to Entertainment Weekly that his character might have realized that what he thought he wanted wasn't all that cracked up to be.
"Whenever we get something, there's the chance it's not quite how you imagined," the actor said.
But whatever happens when the show returns later this year, "Vikings" fans will surely be there to witness it.
