With the season 5 finale "Home" bringing all fans into a frenzied halt, it's no surprise that the next season will be filled with character developments and surprises. So what exactly will happen on the next season? The show's executive producer Julie Plec talked to TVLine and revealed some interesting happenings that will unfold when the show returns.

"Finding peace" and getting "sucked into oblivion" is something that the vampires are ultimately drawn to, and the producer clears which direction some of the main characters have headed. Some might have found peace, while some will eventually meet their shadowy demise.

"We don't like to say things like "heaven" and "hell" on our show, but anybody can define what they saw the way they want to define it," said Plec, as reported by TVLine. "I can say that Lexi, in my heart, found peace, and I believe the same is true for Grams. I definitely know that Silas and Markos and everybody else is definitely gone for good."

Another massive character development will belong to Paul Wesley's character, Stefan. Fans know that Stefan has had many tests, including dying and being resurrected in season 5's finale.

"I think it'll be surprising. I don't want to say too much about it, but he lost something very profound, and there are a million ways he could go," says Plec. She suggested that Stefan "could go dark," and that there will be something
