'The Young Pope' episode 7 spoilers: The young Pope Pius XIII shows signs of weakness
Barely nine months in his job, Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law) has created new antagonists in the sixth episode of the HBO drama series, "The Young Pope." In the upcoming episode 7, however, the pope is showing some signs of weakness.
In the teaser trailer from HBO, the pope is showing some signs of weakness and Sister Mary (Diane Keaton) claims that it is the right time for them to ask him to sign a document, if there is any. Sister Mary also laments the destruction of the holy Roman Church.
Meanwhile, let's take a look at other events in episode 6. The episode opens with a cardinal dropping dead, while they are eating breakfast. In his remark, Cardinal Caltanissetta (Toni Bertorelli) claims that the church will also suffer the same fate as the dead cardinal, which is to die of old age.
Moreover, Cardinal Ozolins (Vladimir Bibic) is shown leading a mass in the middle of snow in Ketchikan, Alaska, while Monsignor Bernardo Gutierrez (Javier Cámara) is appointed as cardinal. Esther (Ludivine Sagnier) has given birth to her baby, and Andrew (Scott Shepard) has engaged in a steamy moment with a busty woman and a handsome man while deployed in Honduras.
The pope also had a discussion about the issues confronting the church, including the continuous decline of its finances and prestige, as well as the appearance of new fundamentalist sects. During the discussion, Cardinal Angelo Voiello (Silvio Orlando) asks the pope if he is not burdened by his risky and unpopular decisions, in which the young pontiff answers in the negative.
The highlight of the episode is the heated argument between the pope and the Italian Prime Minister during the latter's visit to Vatican. The focus of their debate are the Prime Minister's liberal agenda such as same-sex marriage and the abolition of the eight per thousand tax.
In the debate, the young pope virtually blackmails the Prime Minister when he threatened that he could decree "non expedit," a law that prohibits Catholics from taking part in elections. Knowing that this could adversely affect his re-election, the Prime Minister declares the pope as a saint during a press conference he called after their meeting to appease him.
"The Young Pope" is a drama series about the life of former Archbishop of New York Lenny Belardo, particularly his exploits following his appointment as the Catholic Church's Pope Pius XIII.
Catch "The Young Pope" every Sundays and Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, with episode 7 airing on Feb. 5, Sunday.
