'The X-Files' news: Fox TCA clip reveals Mulder and Scully are back to being friends

"The X-Files" is not just known for its conspiracy theories and alien abductions. The chemistry and tension that fans could feel between Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) was also a big reason why they kept coming back for more, season after season. And to see them finally as a couple in "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" was like a dream come true for most.

But a recently unveiled clip of Fox's upcoming shows that were presented at the Television Critics Association press event suggested that the iconic FBI agents are back to being just friends and colleagues.

The short clip was a hectic and dizzying montage of scenes that included a welcome glimpse of actor William B. Davis as The Cigarette Smoking Man. It also showed the usual bickering of Mulder and Scully as each try to justify their individual beliefs and attempt to sway the other.

IGN reported that the scene opened with Scully driving up to what appears to be a house in the middle of nowhere. Once Mulder comes out of the house, Scully starts laying it on him for not getting in touch with her. Mulder starts explaining that he figured something out and couldn't tell her "because this is going to sound crazy." He then insists that Ted O'Malley (Joel McHale) is right about something being "a conspiracy of men" and not an alien conspiracy and that he is going to expose the truth.

"Mulder, listen to me - as your friend and as a physician, you are on dangerous ground here," was Scully's striking reply.

Of course, the way Scully phrased her answer immediately had fans pestering the network for confirmation about the couple's relationship status. While the network remains mum, an insider has allegedly confirmed that Mulder and Scully have indeed ended their (short lived) relationship.

This is indeed very disappointing news for Mulder and Scully shippers. But the duo will undoubtedly still have each other's back despite the breakup. And despite everything, it's guaranteed that there will be millions of people who will still tune in because they still believe in Mulder and Scully.

"The X-Files" is set to return to Fox in January 2016.
