'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers, plot news: Nina Dobrev returns for epic series finale

Last month, it was announced that Nina Dobrev is making a comeback for "The Vampire Diaries" finale. Avid viewers started to speculate which of her characters she is going to play. However, The CW has finally given a clear answer to the question when they recently released a teaser video of the finale. The clip shows Elena Gilbert (Dobrev) waking up from the sleeping spell that made her missing in action since the end of season six.
In the short video, Elena makes an appearance once again in Mystic Falls, looking at the trophy case in her high school. She seems confused as she is heard saying, "What happened? Why am I here right now?"
Talks about her return have been circulating online for months, but now it is confirmed. In an interview with Deadline, show creator Julie Plec said, "I'm thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended – with Nina back to help us say goodbye." Co-creator Kevin Williamson added, "I'm so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!"
In the recently aired episode 13 of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8, Kai (Chris Wood), the villain who cast the sleeping spell on Elena, promised to wake her up. Will he keep this promise or will Elena wake up because Bonnie (Kat Graham), whose life is linked to hers, is going to die?
Fans have been on the edge of their seats since Dobrev announced in January that she is indeed returning to the show through an Instagram post.
In an on-set interview with Entertainment Weekly, she shared that having spent many years on the set of "The Vampire Diaries," she could not help but feel a sense of nostalgia. "It's like a trip down memory lane, and I have so many beautiful memories of the six years that I spent here. I'm really glad that I got to be a part of it," she told the news outlet.
After almost eight long years, the series is finally coming to an end. The epic finale will air on Friday, March 10, at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
