Six characters from the previous seasons will return to Mystic Falls for the much anticipated season finale and farewell episodes of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. Fans of the vampire-themed suspense drama series are definitely looking forward to the return of Elena (Nina Dobrev) to see how her character will achieve closure concerning the Salvatore brothers and their love triangle.

The recently released trailer for the finale revealed too much of the plot that will unfold on the two-hour back-to-back episodes this Friday as Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon come home defeated after what can be assumed was an encounter with Elena's doppelganger, Katherine. When the two arrive, they see that Elena's coffin is empty, and Stefan is heard saying, "Earlier, Bonnie's heart stopped. She said she saw Elena."

What fans expected to be Bonnie's (Kat Graham) potential death once Elena returns from her deep sleep turn out to be a miracle of sorts as the former seems to be recovering. It is not guaranteed, however, that Bonnie is safe. As Katherine continues with her rampage to kill people in Mystic Falls, there is no telling who will survive her deadly wrath.

Aside from the much-awaited reunion between Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), the other characters that are expected to make an appearance include Vicki (Kayla Ewell), Jenna (Sara Canning), Elena's biological father John (David Anders), Tyler (Michael Trevino), Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), and Lexi (Arielle Kebbel), according to reports.

Aside from the return of the above-mentioned characters, someone is also expected to die, unfortunately. According to Buddy TV, it is highly likely that Damon will be the candidate as the consequence of the many murders he has done in Mystic Falls. While he may be the most loved character in the series, he is also the most unpredictable and diabolical, falling victim to the control of evil forces that compel him to kill some more. Fans may also remember that he has been responsible for making Elena's life a living hell.

Of course, there is also Stefan, who was responsible for turning his brother into a vampire against his will and who has long been looking for a way to redeem himself. But the one sure way to determine who will survive and who will not is to watch the season and series finale this coming Friday.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 finale will air on Friday, March 10, at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
