"The Vampire Diaries" is set to resume its 7th season and fans are no doubt hoping they will finally learn Stefan's fate.

The previous episode of "The Vampire Diaries" saw Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) on a hunt for the herb that will protect them from Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff), while Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) look for a way to permanently take down the vampire hunter. The episode ended with Stefan in Rayna's clutches and Damon apparently willing to take his brother's place.

The show has finally caught up with the flash forwards, and fans now better understand how things ended up the way they did. What does this mean now for the Salvatore brothers?

A synopsis for episode 16 sheds a little light on what fans can expect and it seems that Damon's offer to have Stefan's scar transferred isn't as easy or as clear cut as it sounds. Apparently, transferring it will come with unexpected consequences. And with Rayna almost at Stefan's heels, Valerie tries to reason with Damon. Meanwhile, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) is trying to prove that the accusation that he broke Rayna out of The Armory is false. But "a violent run-in with Nora (Scarlett Byrne) forces him to make an upsetting discovery."

The network has released a trailer for the upcoming episode, "Days of Future Past," and it doesn't look good for either of the brothers. The clip shows that Rayna has finally caught up with Stefan and tells him that the only way he can be free is to "let Damon go." Meanwhile, Damon is in a car and is determined to figure out how to get them out of this mess. But it might be too late as the trailer ends with Rayna demanding if Stefan is ready to leave Damon behind and he surprisingly says yes.

Somerhalder returned to the director's chair for this episode and it feels like he has a special connection to it. The actor recently posted a photo showing that he was still working on the episode post-production. He also invited fans to view the episode with him and promised that it will "tug at your heartstrings."

It certainly seems like it's the end of the line for the brothers. But there's no question that Damon and Stefan will find a way out of their current predicament. And with season 8 in the bag, the writers now have the luxury to really bring this story arc to life.

Episode 16 of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will be aired on April 1.
