Season six of "The Vampire Diaries" just took a shocking twist: Damon's mother is well and alive, living in a 1903 prison world and was a ripper back in the day. Kai reveals to the eldest Salvatore brother that Lily turned into a blood-lusting vampire in 1858 and killed nearly 3,000 people across Europe before being put in prison by the Gemini Coven. Episode 16 saw Damon learn more shocking truths about his mother and Stephan flipping his humanity switch. Thanks Caroline.

In episode 17 named "A Bird In A Gilded Cage", a determined Damon travels to 1903 prison world along with Elena to rescue his mother. But he doesn't do it without the help of his fellow witches Bonnie and Kai, reports WetPaint. Will they emerge successful in their mission of rescuing Lily?

Meanwhile, Caroline has plans for Stephan but they backfire. The promotional clip for the upcoming episode shows Stephan killing Caroline. The episode's synopsis teases that she will be left to pick up the pieces. However, Enzo and Alaric haven't given up on the (former) Barbie vampire. At Whitmore College, the duo will try to get to Caroline, only to find themselves outnumbered and outmaneuvered. Perhaps the most shocking spoilers for the episode is that Damon will receive a shocking gift from Bonnie that leaves him shaken to the core. What gift could Bonnie give him that leaves him flabbergasted?

The International Business Times teases a romance between Damon and Bonnie, while Damon and Elena's love grows faint. Fans know that Damon and the witch bonded during their stay in 1994, but can that bond grow into something romantic? Viewers will have to wait and watch.

Meanwhile, sultry actor Ian Somerhalder gave a rare glimpse into the intriguing mind of Damon Salvatore in an interview to TVLine. Damon was abandoned by two of the most important women in his life- his mother, Lily and love, Katherine. The fact that they left and did so without anguish crushes the eldest Salvatore. Ardent Damon fans do feel bad for the highly misunderstood vampire.
