The 2008 horror-thriller film "The Strangers," starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, is finally pushing through with a sequel, "The Strangers 2," with a new director on the helm — Johannes Roberts ("The Other Side of the Door").

The plot of the sequel now centers on a family who are out on a road trip and eventually arrives at an isolated mobile home park. They stay the night using the trailer until the power goes out and three people wearing masks come out to torment them.

Roberts expressed his excitement for the new upcoming film project, saying that he is eager to "bring the brilliant set-up from the first movie to a new generation and deliver a powerful sequel."

"The Strangers 2" is still written by Bryan Bertino, writer of the first movie, along with Ben Ketai ("The Forest") this time. The sequel is scheduled to start shooting this summer. Casting, however, is still reportedly underway.

The upcoming sequel is also produced alongside The Fyzz Facility Pictures in association with Relativity Media. Bloom, meanwhile, will also handle international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin, joining other crime-thrillers, namely, "Dragged Across Concrete" and "Hacksaw's Ridge."

In a statement, The Fyzz's co-founder Mark Lane said, "'The Strangers' redefined the home invasion genre by perfectly combining character and terror in a way that we rarely see," adding, "This is a sequel that has been eagerly awaited and we are delighted to deliver it to the fans."

The first "The Strangers" movie had a budget of $9 million but grossed over $82.4 million worldwide. Tyler and Speedman played a couple who stayed at a secluded rest house after joining an event, and was later terrorized by three mask-wearing people who, apparently, hurt them for "being home."

The sequel was first planned in 2009 but did not materialize due to financial troubles with Relativity Media. French filmmaker Laurent Briet, then Marcel Langenegger in 2015, were said to be in negotiations to direct the sequel before Roberts was finally confirmed.
