'The OA' release date, news: New Netflix original gets rave reviews
Netflix's newly released series "The OA" has been getting a lot of rave reviews as of late. Dubbed as the new "Stranger Things," the series was released on Dec. 16, 2016.
The show focuses on Brit Marling's Prairie Johnson, who has been missing for the past seven years. She suddenly reappears out of nowhere and everyone is surprised to find that something vital has changed about her. When she disappeared, Prairie was blind; but she now finds herself being able to see.
Consisting of only eight episodes, the show has been on the receiving end of praises from reviewing websites.
According to Wired, the series "provokes deep thoughts" and at the same time, "also function[s] as a happily pulp-splattered thriller, full of mad scientists and secret rooms. Sometimes it's gorgeous; sometimes it's absolutely hooey. Yet it's impossible not to want to explore 'The OA' further."
The Atlantic was surprised by the release of the sci-fi drama, since not a lot of promotion was done prior to its arrival. But don't be fooled by the seemingly simple plot of the show, as the publication describes it as "more complex and layered than the premise might suggest."
"As the show unspools, it challenges notions of who's trustworthy and who isn't, while offering its own testament to the transformational nature of imagination," the review concludes, while also comparing the show's heroine to "Stranger Things" character Eleven, played by breakout star Millie Bobby Brown.
The series currently holds an 85 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audience score remains at a meager 50 percent. The reception on Metacritic, on the other hand, is different — with an average score of 59 from critics and a 7.4 from users, the latter of which indicates generally favorable reviews.
Since reviews can only get viewers so far, they will have to judge for themselves. "The OA" is a Netflix original and can be viewed on the streaming service right now.
