'The Night Shift' season 3 spoilers: An explosion rips through San Antonio Medical in episode 9; does TC know who's behind the bombing?

"The Night Shift" will be taking a short break, but when it returns, fans can expect one explosive episode.
The previous episode of "The Night Shift" had great moments of levity interspersed between the serious stuff. Episode 8 saw the doctors trying to save a foster mother who was in a car accident with her daughter. Meanwhile, Topher's mom came in with a mysterious malady that resulted in some amusing but uncomfortable moments for the resident.
Unfortunately, there's very little room for lighthearted moments in episode 9 when a bomb explodes outside the hospital. TC (Eoin Macken), Topher (Ken Leung) and Drew (Brendan Fehr) have to decide whether they will stay and treat the wounded or evacuate everyone and transfer them to nearby hospitals. However, things change when TC realizes that he might know who's behind the bombing. Things become even more complicated when the nurses of San Antonio Medical go on strike at the moment the hospital needs them the most. In the midst of an intense shift, Shannon (Tanaya Beatty) and Paul (Robert Bailey, Jr.) try to talk to each other about something very personal.
A trailer for the upcoming episode, titled "Unexpected," gives fans a glimpse of what to expect. The clip starts with a shot of TC helping a fellow soldier in Afghanistan. The scene then shifts to the hospital as a bomb apparently explodes out front, shattering the doors and windows of the ER. Total chaos ensues as doctors try to shake off the effects of the explosion. The hospital is shown filled with smoke and in disarray and TC looking down at a wounded nurse. The clip ominously hints that the war has followed TC home.
The explosion is undoubtedly twice as shocking to TC, Topher, and Drew as these doctors have probably thought they have already left the violence of the war zone behind.
Fans would have to wait a week for a new episode of their favorite medical drama as the series makes way for the Republican National Convention. But the network will be making up for it by airing two episodes back-to-back on Aug. 3.
NBC will air episode 9 of "The Night Shift" season 3 on July 27 at 10 p.m.
