'The Last Ship' season 4 spoilers: Chandler's trauma over Tex's death to hinder his return to the Navy

Tex Nolan's (John Pyper-Ferguson) death will continue to haunt Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) in the next season of "The Last Ship."

Showrunner Steven Kane previously revealed in an interview that the final straw for the captain to make him leave the Navy was witnessing his friend die in front of his eyes. The last installment had been particularly hard on Chandler. Aside from losing Tex, his father was also killed. It was all part of Allison Shaw's (Elisabeth Rohm) plans to take him down. In the end, although he succeeded in stopping her, Chandler was scarred and in need of a break. He resigned from his position and it remains unclear what he wants to do in the future. If there is one thing that is sure to happen in season 4, it will be Chandler's continued guilt over Tex's murder. This may even be the reason why he has no wish to return to the Navy.

"What was also interesting for us was that Tex before he died was saying, 'Don't [kill Allison Shaw]. This is not who you are.' He's trying to remind Chandler of all the things Chandler's having trouble remembering in the heat of passion. Right before he passes away, he says to him, 'You're a good man.' ... That's going to echo for Chandler throughout the future of the show," the EP said.

Meanwhile, Dane recently told Three If By Space that the new season is going to be as intense as the last one. He said the new storyline would revolve around Chandler's "journey back to consciousness." It is possible that Chandler will return to being a civilian after quitting the Navy, where he hopes to come to terms with everything that happened. Viewers can expect that it is going to be a hard journey for the man who once saved the world from extinction.

"The Last Ship" season 4 is expected to start airing in 2017.
