'The Flash' season 2 cast update: WWE's Edge gets role in show as Atom-Smasher

"The Flash" is still a little less than three months away but fans of the DC superhero already had a preview of what is to come with leaked photos of the cast and crew shooting for season two.

Included in this shoot is a masked villain, which was then unnamed. This week, new photos revealed who that new enemy is and it is no other than retired WWE star, Adam Copeland aka Edge.

In the new set photos of "The Flash" posted by Vancity Buzz and YVR Shoots, viewers finally get to see the new villain unmasked. Grant Gustin's Barry Allen will be face-to-face with Adam Copeland, known to WWE fans as Edge. The recent set photos of the superhero series show Central City celebrating "Flash Day" and Copeland's character comes in to challenge The Fastest Man Alive.

Copeland will be playing DC's Atom-Smasher and ScreenCrush posted CW's official profile on the character, "One of the most powerful enemies we encounter this season, Atom Smasher has come to Central City to kill The Flash. His incredible strength and ability to grow to enormous size makes him more than a match for Flash and the entire S.T.A.R. Labs team will have to come together to find a way to defeat him."

Though certainly exciting, this particular description of the Atom-Smasher, whose secret identity is Albert Rothstein, may confuse a lot of DC Comics fans.

Atom-Smasher is generally regarded as a superhero, serving both Infinity, Inc. and The Justice Society. But season one did mention that Rothstein was affected by the particle accelerator and this tidbit may factor a lot into why the TV Atom-Smasher is dueling with The Flash.

ScreenCrush also speculates that the current Atom-Smasher may be one of those characters from the parallel Earth-2, as hinted during the San Diego Comic-Con.

Fans get their answers on Oct. 6, when "The Flash" returns for season 2.
