'The Expendables 4' release date: Film happening in 2017; no word yet on cast, director

The mercenary group The Expendables is not done yet. A new sequel of the movie has been confirmed and will begin shooting in 2016.
"The Expendables" franchise already has three movies under its belt but it is not about to stop any time soon. Variety confirms that "The Expendables 4" is in the works and will begin filming next year with an expected release in 2017. Fans can expect bigger things for the upcoming film as it is rumored to have the biggest budget of all the films in the franchise.
This comes off as good news to everyone — fans and cast, alike — as no one expected a fourth movie. "The Expendables 3" did not fare so well in the box office, compared to the first two in the series. To be fair to the last movie, though, the reason it did not earn as much is that there have been a lot of torrents and streaming copies of the entire film right before it was released in theatres. Other moviegoers opted to skip it, too, when its rating was reduced to PG-13 rather than the original R that the other movies bore.
The fourth movie is happening, thanks to a Chinese investment of at least $100 million. Apparently, "The Expendables 3" did so great in China. While the film did not even bank $40 million in the U.S. (it fell short at $39.3 million), it raked in huge bucks in China. According to the online publication, the film earned $78 million in China.
The deal to produce the next movie in "The Expendables" franchise was reportedly made between the film's production company, Millennium Films / Nu Image, and SP International Pictures of SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution. Acting as executive producers are Steven Paul and Shanghai Kuailu Investment Group chairman Dr. Shi Jianxiang.
The film is still in early negotiations and as such, has not pinned any cast or director yet. It is a huge possibility, though, that Sylvester Stallone will be back to reprise his role.
Stay tuned for other updates.
