'The Blacklist' season 4 release date, spoilers, cast news: Will Elizabeth Keen return?

(NBC)Will Liz Keen return for season 4?

Although fans are happy that "The Blacklist" was renewed for a fourth season, many are wondering how the crime/drama series will recover from the death of Elizabeth Keen.

While NBC has yet to release an official release date, the series is expected to return by September or October. Series creator Jon Bokenkamp has also reassured fans that despite the shocking twists of season 3, there is still a lot of storylines to uncover.

"It's one of those things that's hard to keep quiet. But yes, we're renewed through the fourth season. Hopefully, we don't tank that out. We've got a lot of story to tell," Bokenkamp revealed during "The Blacklist Exposed" podcast last December.

As for possible season 4 storylines, could the show focus on the return of Liz?

Following the trend of resurrecting characters on shows like "Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead," many are hoping that Liz is still alive. In the 18th episode of the current season, Liz was being hunted by Mr. Solomon and had died shortly after giving birth to daughter Agnes. It is possible that her death may have been faked for her own safety.

Liz's death is likely seen as the result of actress Megan Boone's real-life pregnancy and maternity leave. Could she return for season 4? Fans are hoping, especially since much of her past and her connection to Red has yet to be revealed. Unfortunately, at this time, it is still too early to tell.

Meanwhile, season 3 of "The Blacklist" is set to air its penultimate episode "Alexander Kirk" and its final episode "Alexander Kirk: Conclusion" on May 12 and 19, respectively.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Alexander Kirk is "a charismatic, extremely reclusive, multi-national businessman who runs a global energy empire." He will be using all the power and resources that he amassed to take revenge on nemesis Raymond Reddington.

Be sure to catch the last two episodes airing Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. Season 4 of "The Blacklist" will premiere this fall.
