'The Blacklist' season 3: focus shifts to Elizabeth Keen; Ressler relationship might deepen

Ever since Raymond Reddington asked for Elizabeth Keen in the first season, fans have been wondering what his connection to her is. And the way things ended last season on "The Blacklist" only made fans excited to uncover more about Red and Liz.

In the season finale, Liz (Megan Boone) fatally shot Attorney General Tom Connolly (Reed Birney) when he threatened both her and Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix). Liz escaped from the police with Red's (James Spader) help. But the event made her remember how she shot and killed her father in order to protect her mother. Liz's former partner, Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff), replaces Director Cooper as head of the task force. He then places Liz on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.

That explosive ending has certainly set the stage for a more exciting, dynamic and compelling third season, especially now that Liz is no longer with the FBI and is being hunted by the people she once considered her allies.

It is an idea that Boone, the actress playing Liz, certainly believes in. In an interview with Zap2It, Boone said that the next season "is going to be the same characters but a different show, a very different dynamic." The show certainly cannot go back to the procedural formula that drove the previous seasons, a fact that would make season three even more challenging. According to Boone, having a structure does help a show, especially one that has 22 episodes a year "but we are going to sort of break open a lot of the structure of the show."

There have even been reports that a bigger and badder villain might be introduced next season, someone that can go up against Red and drive the stakes even higher.

Another change that is coming to the show is the shift of focus to Liz. Now that she finally remembers everything, the former FBI agent will do everything she can to learn more of who she was, maybe even at the expense of her relationship with Tom.

There is also the question of Liz's relationship with Ressler and Reddington. "The Blacklist" Executive Producer John Eisendrath talked to TV Guide and admitted that there would not be a relationship between the two former colleagues any time soon. But the character will be placed in certain situations that will make him emotionally vulnerable and "will give Liz an opportunity to reach out to him and support him in a way that will deepen their relationship."

But Red and Liz's relationship is different. Fans know that there are feelings there, but it does not feel romantic. Boone admits that Liz probably loves Red and he reciprocates the feeling but "it is a confusing kind of love."

Whatever those feelings are might finally be answered when "The Blacklist" returns on September 24.
