'The Blacklist: Redemption' spoilers, teasers: Co-creators John Eisendrath and Jon Bokenkamp tease 'The Blacklist' spin-off
"The Blacklist: Redemption," a spin-off series of "The Blacklist," debuts this week on NBC. Find out what co-creators John Eisendrath and Jon Bokenkamp have to say about the new TV series.

In an interview with Yahoo!, the co-creators identified what makes "The Blacklist: Redemption" different from the original series. "It's big. It's crazy. This has a real flash and flair and musical sensibility and scope," Eisendrath told the news outlet, adding that the latter will be lighthearted compared to the original series.
According to Eisendrath and Bokenkamp, "Redemption" will follow the story of an elite mercenary team that handles the world's most dangerous criminals. The spin-off features how the team plans for and overcomes impossible missions. This elite squad of mercenaries will be led by Susan "Scottie" Hargrave (Famke Janssen), the mother of Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold), as revealed in the third season of "The Blacklist." It will also include Tom's nemesis, Matias Solomon (Edi Gathegi).
Tom will go undercover to find out the truth about his mother and her company's business. In the spin-off series, viewers will see more of the dysfunctional love-hate relationship between mother and son, Scottie and Tom. Bokenkamp describes the duo's relationship as "very peculiar, curious, twisted."
The co-creators revealed that "The Blacklist: Redemption" almost did not happen mainly because they tried to kill off Tom multiple times in the original series. A number of those supposed deaths were slated to happen in the first season of "The Blacklist." An executive, however, suggested that they keep the character. Eventually, Tom grew into this compelling character who carried so much potential for new storylines.
Instead of being just Liz's husband, he became this dangerous undercover specialist who consequently opened new doors of the character. "When we learned who he was, that he could go undercover, that he could transform and become anybody, that started to feel like a character you might want to watch a show about," Eisendrath explained.
"The Blacklist: Redemption" premieres Feb. 23 at 10 p.m. EST on NBC, following "The Blacklist" season 4 winter finale.
