With famous dystopian movie franchises like "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" almost ending, there's bound to be space for another young adult film adaptation to take its place. Sony Pictures hopes that "The 5th Wave" will be able to make its mark on cinemas when it premieres in 2016.

"The 5th Wave" is a science fiction thriller starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Moretz plays Cassie, a teen girl trying to survive the alien invasion of Earth. The aliens have already attacked in four waves, which has led to the decimation of Earth. With a fifth impending attack on its way, Cassie teams up with classmate, Ben (Nick Robinson) and a stranger named Evan (Alex Roe) in order to save his younger brother.

Sony recently unveiled the action-packed film trailer detailing the effects of the first four waves. In the first wave, the aliens wiped out the power. Wave two came as a powerful earthquake that destroyed most infrastructures. The third spread a massive epidemic across the globe. Then, the aliens finally descended on Earth during the fourth wave. Due to their ability to inhabit human bodies, it has become harder to trust anyone. With the fifth wave about to hit, Cassie tries to prepare herself for the worst.

"The 5th Wave" is based on the first installment in Rick Yancey's trilogy. The second book in the series, "The Infinite Sea" was released in 2014 and the final book, "The Last Star," is scheduled for a May 2016 release.

Sony has already acquired the film rights to "The 5th Wave" trilogy. While it is still unknown if "The 5th Wave" will be able to perform well at the box-office, it seems likely that Sony will continue to produce the film trilogy.

The upcoming film also stars Liev Schreiber, Maika Monroe and Zackary Arthur and is directed by J. Blakeson.

"The 5th Wave" is set to be released to theaters on Jan. 15, 2016.
