Episode 7 titled "13" of "The 100" season 3 has shocked avid viewers with a big plot twist: Lexa died.

Just hours after Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Clarke (Eliza Taylor) had their long-awaited intimate moment, Titus (Neil Sandilands) came to the picture and wanted to take out his hatred for Clarke to full force and brought a gun with him. He was not meant to kill Lexa, but she was exactly at the wrong place at the wrong time and took the bullet to her torso.

But that was not the only bombshell from the episode. It was also revealed that a certain Artificial Intelligence called ALIE was created by Becca (Erica Cerra) and that the AI had been responsible for destroying the Earth.

Variety asked showrunner Jason Rothenberg about what the future holds for Clarke, to which he answered, "Clarke is now going to be in mourning... [A]nd part of her story going forward is going to be... '[H]ow do I go forward as a leader in the face of tragedy?"'

Fans are speculating, though, that Lexa's death is not just about how the writers want the storyline to be. Debnam-Carey is now playing a regular role in "Fear the Walking Dead" and her schedule might be in conflict between the two shows that they had to kill her character off.

Rothenberg admitted that at some point, Debnam-Carey's schedule had become a major factor in their decision. He added that he knew she would have to stop working for the series.

"[N]obody loves Lexa more than I do, and Alycia has been a joy to work with... I would've made her a series regular in a second if I could, but that couldn't happen," he said.

However, he clarified that her death was necessary for them to explore the subject of reincarnation more and why it is important in the series' story.

Now that Commander Lexa is dead, the upcoming episodes will deal with choosing the next one. At the end of the episode, Titus said that the "conclave" has begun.

"The 100" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
