Tanning harmful for children under 18

D-New Orleans State Rep. Helena Moreno, proposed a bill that aims to ban kids 16 and under from getting into any tanning bed in Louisiana
Kora Morgan is proof than tanning have bad effects for kids. Morgan loved tanning when she was younger. Now, she is fighting a deadly Stage 4 Melanoma Cancer.
"When I was 13 and 14 years old, I tanned quite a bit," Morgan said. Back then, her whole family though that the tanning bed was safe. The family even had a tanning bed at home. Morgan stopped using the machine when she was 19. But it was too late as the Melanoma was already in her system.
With this experience, she called for the attention of the House Health and Welfare Committee to ban use of tanning equipment using ultraviolet radiation to kids and teens under age 18 years of age.
"The most dangerous time to use these machines is when you are a young adult," shared Morgan. She even compared it to cigarettes, "They are carcinogenic. They are unsafe."
With her testimonial, as well as the testimony of dermatologists, the health committee listened, and voted 17-1 for the legislation under which tanning salons would lose young customers. The only representative who voted no was State Rep. Richard Burford.
"It's not because I want people to get melanoma," Burford said. He said his vote is one of government interference in parental responsibility.
The bill by State Rep. Helena Moreno now moves to the House floor for action.
Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. The ere is no exact cause where melanomas come from but exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds increase the risk of developing melanoma.
