'Switched at Birth' season 5 rumours, news: Will Kathryn and John Kennish divorce?; Bay's phone call might be about John's heart problem
Fans are still waiting for news on when "Switched at Birth" season 5 will air, as the long wait has no doubt been hard on fans who are wondering about the mysterious phone call that Bay and Daphne got. Could it be that the girls received news that Kathryn Kennish is divorcing her husband John?
The Kennish and Vasquez families certainly had their ups and downs in season 4. But it ended on a good note, with the girls spreading their wings and traveling to China. But just as the sisters were settling down, Bay (Vanessa Marano) received a phone call about an emergency back home.
Some fans have speculated that the girls might have received some dire news about John's (D.W Moffett) health. As Crossmap pointed out, the Kennish patriarch had had some health issues the previous season which might have been compounded by the financial difficulties the family has been facing.
However, other fans are thinking that the emergency that had the girls rushing home might be about something less deadly but still life-changing – a divorce.
Katherine (Lea Thompson) and John' marriage was definitely tested last season, what with their financial problems and the return of her colleague, Craig (Sam Page).
"Switched at Birth's" showrunner Lizzy Weiss discussed that relationship and the possibility of a Kennish divorce with TV Line. According to Weiss, Daphne's (Katie Leclerc) biological mother "needed a freak out," after everything that she has been through – losing her car wash business, becoming a grandmother. She added that they thought it would be fun to see a different aspect of her, to see the normally steady woman do something unexpected.
"In everybody's marriage, there are bumps ... and hopefully you push past them," Weiss explains. "Craig was just a fun way to get her into a fancy dress and to enjoy a nice moment, instead of being so stand-by-your-man."
But Weiss assured fans that despite Craig's return and how she feels about John, Kathryn will still stand by him and won't cheat on him. However, that doesn't mean that the two will remain married, especially after all the wrong decisions that John has made recently. But Weiss says that was precisely what made the character fun to watch.
As the producer explained to the site, fans love John "when he does the right thing - but he doesn't always do the right thing." However, what's good is that the character continues to grow.
There's no official announcement yet but "Switched at Birth" season 5 will reportedly return to TV screens sometime this year.
