'Star Trek' TV series news: Michael Dorn teases what to expect from the 2017 series
Gene Roddenberry's iconic "Star Trek" franchise would be celebrating its golden anniversary next year, and in line with the festivities CBS has since announced that the series would be returning to the small screen in 2017. In an official press release published in the network's official website, Marc DeBevoise has confirmed that not only would the upcoming television program be broadcasted nationwide, but it would be the first for the legendary franchise to be available on demand.
"This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before — directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access. We've experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series."
Alex Kurtzman, producer and writer for the 2009 reboot of the 'Star Trek' series, has since signed on as the executive producer of the upcoming television series. Aside from Kurtzman's participation, details surrounding the television reboot has been scarce. However 'Star Trek' alum Michael Dorn has recently hinted on where in the canon the 2017 series would jump off from.
During this year's Rhode Island Comic-Con as reported by Trek News, Dorn revealed that there is a possibility that his character "Captain Worf" would not be included in the series. Based on what he has read, the show would take place following J.J. Abrams 2009 story line and as such it might not feature iconic characters from the original series.
"From what I've read, it's going to be the J.J. Abrams-universe. So, it's going to be a different timeline and we are not in it." quipped Dorn.
The untitled 'Star Trek' television project is scheduled to debut on January of 2017.
