Comedy Central announced on Apr. 7 that "South Park" season 20 will premiere on Sept. 14. The series is currently the second longest-running US cartoon and has been renewed for three more seasons.

A statement from the network's president Michele Ganeles goes:

"South Park' remains the bedrock of Comedy Central and we are thrilled that new episodes will continue to entertain audiences for years to come. The series remains as urgent and relevant now as the day it premiered and at nearly 20 seasons in it continues to draw generations of new fans."

Over the years, "South Park" has revolved around different topics, the recent ones surrounding religion. Rumors have it that the upcoming season, which is composed of 10 episodes, will touch on politics. Co-writers and co-directors Trey Parker and Matt Stone will continue to head the show.

The series currently has a total of 264 episodes, and with 10 episodes per season, it is assured to reach its 300th-episode milestone. South Park Studios also renewed its ties with online streaming home Hulu and the deal covers all upcoming seasons.

Viacom Music & Entertainment Group president Doug Herzog acknowledged:

"Nearly two decades later, 'South Park' today remains as important and influential as any series on any platform and has become one of the most recognizable brands to ever come out of television. Through South Park Digital Studios we will continue to aggressively expand the reach of the 'South Park' brand by pursuing additional extensions and licensing opportunities worldwide."

Parker and Stone also shared a joint statement describing their working relationship with Comedy Central. The statement reads:

"We love working for Doug and with everyone at Comedy Central. They've given us an insane level of artistic and creative freedom for almost 20 years. They walk the walk."

Waiting for September may be agonizing for some "South Park" fans, but the adventures of Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick are definitely worth the wait.
