Sony Xperia XR release date, specs rumors: Xperia XR to be unveiled at Sony IFA 2016?

Sony is rumored to prepare the launch of its newest smartphone offering, currently dubbed as Xperia XR, at the 2016 IFA in Berlin, Germany.

The tech giant hasn't confirmed any details yet, but it has already sent out invites to the event, which will take place on Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. local time or 7 a.m. EDT. Although there wasn't a mention about what smartphone the company will introduce, rumors are rife that Xperia X's successor will take the spotlight.

Previous reports stated that the alleged Xperia XR has a similar design with the phone that bears the model number F8331, which then led to speculations that the phones are actually one and the same. However, it appears that the image of a phone shown on the invite looks to be a different device than the rumored Xperia XR or F8331. According to GSM Arena, though, it would be pointless for Sony to tease an image of a new device on the invite as this would only spoil the surprise.

Meanwhile, the Xperia XR will reportedly outdo Xperia X Performance with an alleged 1080p screen resolution with 4K video capture capability. Tipster @OnLeaks also mentioned in his tweet earlier this month that the phone will measure approximately 146.4x71.9x8.1mm.

Other rumors about the device include a 5.1-inch display, a Snapdragon 820 processor and a 3 GB of random access memory (RAM). An Adreno 530 graphics processing unit is also said to be onboard. The alleged device is also said to feature a USB Type-C connection for faster charging. If proven to be true, this would be a big change for the Xperia line and for Sony, since it would be the first device to sport such type of connection.

Xperia XR, for now, still belongs to the rumor category and all these speculations or leaks about the device could be wrong. Fans will just have to wait for a couple more weeks to find out what Sony has in store for the public.
