San Diego Chargers roster rumors 2016: team to part ways with Keenan Allen?
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen is out again after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during their season opener last Sunday. This is the second consecutive year he failed to play for the majority of a season and it might spell doom, with regards to his stay with the franchise.
The last time Allen played more than 10 games in a campaign was in the 2014 season. Last year, he was limited to only eight games because of a kidney injury.
Allen quickly made an impact with the Chargers after they selected him in the third round (76th overall) of the 2013 National Football League (NFL) draft. He had great outings during his first two seasons, but the last two were cut short by health setbacks.
Perhaps it is too early to say the Chargers are planning to dispose Allen just because of the unfortunate incidents. But it is not impossible, especially if this trend continues for the 24-year-old in the next few years.
The Chargers have been having difficulties making it to the playoffs in the past five years. In that stretch, the only time they graced the postseason was in the 2013 season. Surely they want to get better, and for now, it looks like sticking with Allen is not going to help them.
Despite the potential departure from San Diego looming, Allen remains positive and this was evident with his message posted on the Chargers official site.
In Allen's statement, he expressed gratitude to the fans and their prayers. He also tried to gather everyone to support the Chargers who will now compete without him.
Instead of being disheartened, Allen also shared that he is moving on since he cannot do anything after sustaining the injury and called the situation "tough." But he also promised that he will return "stronger."
