WGN America's first original supernatural drama series "Salem" will no longer be renewed for a fourth season much to the dismay of the show's loyal followers. The show's ongoing third season brings to life events that were inspired by the 17^th century witch trials. The third season will conclude the story of Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) in the show's 10th episode that will air in 2017.

Creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon have prepared for the possibility of a non-renewal. The two have nothing but good things to say about their experience of making "Salem" and working with their cast and production crew.

"We are grateful to WGN America and Fox 21 for being terrific partners and giving us free reign to create a satisfying conclusion — one we believe respects our love of storytelling and the show's passionate fans," said Braga and Simon in a statement. "It was a magical experience to create Salem and we want to thank every producer, writer, director, actor, and crew member, for all they have done to help us bring the world of Salem to life."

According to Deadline, "Salem" became a game changer for WGN America when the cable channel decided to take risk and make its own original series in partnership with Fox 21 Television Studios. The TV series attracted 1.5 million viewers when it premiered in 2014, according to the report — the highest rating the channel ever encountered in over seven years. Unfortunately, the show also lost its sparkle when season 3 returned with only 200,000–300,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, Matt Cherniss, president and general manager of WGN America and Tribune Studios, shared his sentiments regarding the show's cancellation in a statement saying, "'Salem' is a fantastic show that greatly contributed to our successful launch into original programming." He also added, "We thank Brannon, Adam, our talented cast and our partners at Fox 21, for entrusting us with their unique and remarkable vision for the world of 'Salem.' We also thank the fans for their loyal support of the show."

Other members of the "Salem" cast include Ashley Madekwe, Tamzin Merchant, Shane West, Seth Gabel, Elise Eberle, and Iddo Goldberg, to mention a few.
