'Rock Dog' release date, news: The furry musician has hurdles to overcome
Song is a language that everyone understands, and nothing can be more adorable than man's best friend. But a dog-musician? This is something that "Rock Dog" aims to present in 2017, hoping to combine two elements of relatability and cuteness overload.
In the US official trailer titled "Follow Your Dream," Bodi, a Tibetan Mastiff, is rather peculiar in a sense that he loves playing music despite being something that his dad, Khampa, forbids. When he finally confronts his dad about wanting to pursue his dream, his dad shuts down his plan, yet, with perseverance, he ventured into the world.
He knows that in order to be successful, he needs a great mentor, and that is when he meets Angus Scattergood. Things go haywire after that, setting events in motion for the wide-eyed canine.
Despite the rather pleasant, vibrant and kid-friendly approach, the film will have a lot to tackle if it is to do well in the box office. Apparently, the movie came at a time when audiences are overloaded with musical animals, particularly in the Illumination film "Sing."
"Sing" is a fairly recent film that revolves around the pursuit of a koala named Buster Moon to keep his theater alive. He thinks of hosting a singing competition, which captures the attention of five animal aspirants. This has the same concept as "Rock Dog," where one tries to reach out for his musical dream, and is personified by animals. It will be a tough job to steer clear of the "rip-off" judgment and present the concept in a unique manner.
Another is its own reputation. It can be recalled that the film was first shown in China last July 8, where the $60 million production met bad reception due to two warring businessmen, sabotaging its release in the process, Cartoon Brew has learned. Although the dismal performance was due to outside forces, most do not know that, and could affect reception in the US audience as well.
The creators need to work double-time, in order to surpass those challenges before "Rock Dog" releases on Feb. 24, 2017.
