'Rings' 2017 film release date, news: TV store prank increases hype for the movie
"The Ring" franchise is arguably one of the well-known horror films that has created an urban legend of its own. Now that a new installment, dubbed "Rings," is coming in February, Paramount Pictures decided to pull a prank on TV shoppers and the results were comical and hilarious.
The prank is done in a TV store where they install sets on the walls and someone dressed as the ominous Samara jumps out of one of the screens. The salesman was obviously preparing the victims for the scare as he tells them to describe the 4K resolution, where people say it looks realistic. At that point, Samara comes crawling out while people dash out the door.
For those who are not aware, "Rings" is the third installment to the western adaptation of the Japanese horror movie. It talks about a curse where when someone watches the ring, that person will have only seven days to live and then Samara will claim his life.
In the latest film, Julia (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz) is worried when his boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe) begins exploring the dark history of the urban legend. She sacrifices her life to save him, but then discovers that there is a movie within the movie, making it an even bigger scare than it was before.
Despite the rather frightening concept, the franchise is hard-pressed to do well on the silver screen. Its predecessor, "The Ring Two," had dismal ratings from the critics, where it got a measly 20 percent from Rotten Tomatoes. As such, it will have to pull off a stunt that viewers have not seen before.
It may be trying to replicate the success of the original Japanese film, "Ringu" (Ring). It immediately created a huge impact to horror that it got a whopping 97 percent from critics.
"Rings" is set to scare once more on Feb. 3.
