Avid viewers of "Reign" were shocked when showrunner Laurie McCarthy first announced that King Francis would be dying this season. Given that "Reign" is a historical fantasy drama about Mary, the Queen of Scots, depicting the death of Francis was inevitable. "I wanted people to get used to it – there was no way around it in the storytelling," McCarthy told Entertainment Weekly.

"I wanted it to be an emotional journey that we all went on and that we could all feel the highs and lows of, and I wanted it to be a love story. I didn't want it to be something that shocked the fans or really anybody. I needed to process it too," she added.

The inevitable finally happened as Francis died during last Friday's "In the Clearing" episode. The episode was heartbreaking as Mary declared, "I will never love anyone the way I love you." However, Francis, as he lay dying in her arms, tells Mary to be open to love once more.

In an all-new episode titled "Fight or Flight" airing this Friday, Nov. 12, Mary realizes that she will have to help Catherine in her quest to becoming regent of France even though it will hurt her alliance with Scotland. Meanwhile, Claude is determined to help Leith marry while Elizabeth struggles with the possibility of losing Dudley.

In the promo footage released, everyone is curious to see what the widowed queen will do now that King Francis has passed away. She tries to remain strong and hold herself together even after experiencing tragedy. Not only has she lost Francis but she had also recently lost her mother, Marie de Guise.

Viewers are looking forward to seeing how Catherine and Mary will get along, especially after Nostradamus had told Catherine that the only way she would become regent would be by working with the Queen of Scots.

Mary will have to continue her journey on her own and find the path she is meant to be on.

Season three of "Reign" airs every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
