'Prison Break' season 5 cast news, updates: new love interests for Lincoln and Sara set to be introduced
Millions of hearts were broken when "Prison Break" ended the series with a terminally sick Michael Scofield sacrificing himself so his wife Sarah and his brother Lincoln can escape. Most fans, including star Wentworth Miller, believed that it was the end of the series. So it came as a sweet surprise when the show was picked up for a fifth season, years after season 4 ended.
Most observers believe that interest in "Prison Break" was revived with Miller and Dominic Purcell's appearance in "The Flash." The two had recurring roles in The CW series as Captain Cold and Heatwave, respectively, and their popularity led to them being cast in another superhero series — "Legends of Tomorrow."
Purcell, who played Scofield's big brother Lincoln Burrows, recently claimed he and TV sibling Miller are responsible for bringing "Prison Break" back to the TV screens. The hulking actor told Express that he and Miller were interested in revisiting the show and went to the studio to pitch the idea. Luckily, the network was already considering a revival and was doubly excited to learn the two were open to the idea.
The 46-year-old also said Miller coming out of semi-retirement got the "Prison Break" ball rolling.
"He gave himself a break and focused on writing," Purcell explained. "He's jumped back into the fray now — and as soon as Wentworth was on board, that's when the dominoes started to fall."
And fall those dominoes did, as one by one the original cast members confirmed that they would be coming back. "Prison Break" convicts Amaury Nolasco (Sucre), Robert Knepper (T-Bag), and Rockmond Dunbar (C-Note) are all returning. The three have even been spotted in Vancouver celebrating and taking photos for the show's loyal fans. Paul Adelstein will also be back to reprise his role as Paul Kellerman. However, there's no word yet on whether William Fichtner will be back to bring fan favorite Alexander Mahone back to life.
There were concerns at first that Sarah Wayne Callies might not be able to come back and play Scofield's long-suffering love, Sara Tancredi, due to her commitment with USA's "Colony." But all's well that ends well and Callies is confirmed to be returning, much to the delight of Michael and Sara shippers everywhere.
Fans will be introduced to some new faces when "Prison Break" returns, including that of Mark Feuerstein, who's been cast to play Sara's new husband. Actress Inbar Lavi has also been cast and will reportedly play Lincoln's new love interest Sheba, an activist.
Production for "Prison Break" season 5 has already started, with the show expected to arrive early 2017.
