Last week, "Penny Dreadful" finally gave fans a sneak peak into its third season with the lone image released via its social media accounts. It teased the return of actress Patti LuPone but as a different character. But why would the show bring the same actress to play a different role?

LuPone first appeared on "Penny Dreadful" in season 2 as Joan Clayton aka Cut-Wife. A daywalker acting as hedge witch, she fell to her death when she surrendered to the lynch mob and faced an assault of oil and flame. She was definitely a memorable character, all thanks to LuPone's powerful acting. That is but one reason the seasoned actress is returning to the show in the upcoming season.

As revealed last week in the first image from season 3, the 66-year-old actress steps into the shoes of Dr. Seward who nurses Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who is seen in a psychiatric ward. As if her performance in the sophomore season is not reason enough to bring her back, fan reaction might be as it has been really positive. Since it was posted on Nov. 13, the photo has been shared and liked and commented on by followers of the horror thriller. Of the 1,839 comments on the photo, a lot have been expressing excitement for LuPone's return. It signals what a good decision it was for the network to bring the actress back.

TVLine has collated the names of the other actors lending their talents to the show in the coming season. The list includes Billie Piper (Lily), Christian Camargo (Alexander Sweet), Jessica Barden (Justine), Shazad Latif (Dr. Henry Jekyll), Wes Studi (native American Kaetney), and Sam Barnett (Dr. Seward's secretary).

Season 3 will show where the characters have been off to after they decided to part ways. For now, fans knows where Vanessa ended up after being left at Sr. Malcolm's London house.

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 is expected to premiere on Showtime in May 2016.
