Although many fans are still hoping for its renewal, "Penny Dreadful" season 4 is not happening. Showtime explained why season 3 is the last to hit the small screen.

According to GameNGuide, Showtime programming president Gary Levine said that ending the series was decided by writer John Logan. Apparently, they believe that the series has run its course, so they did not hesitate in putting "The End" in the last episode. This shocked and confused many viewers, as no announcement of its cancellation was made prior.

The end of "Penny Dreadful" also put an end to lead character Vanessa Ives' (Eva Green) life. Showtime CEO David Nevins suggested that Vanessa had always been envisioned by Logan to live for only three seasons. Hence, no season 4 was planned at the beginning.

Continuing to "Penny Dreadful" season 4 would also not be the same, as both Vanessa and Logan will be absent.

"I was trying to keep open the possibility of going beyond, but as we were going into that final season," Nevins told Digital Spy at the TCA press tour early August, "it became clear that the combination of that character and John as a writer were the heart of the show, so it seemed like it was going to be foolhardy to continue going."

While this would confirm that no more of "Penny Dreadful" penned by Logan is coming, Parent Herald suggested that a spinoff might be possible.

Even without Vanessa, many fans reportedly suggested that the series could continue on and explore other fascinating characters. This would be possible should Showtime executives decide to release a spinoff to satiate the demand.

However, it can be expected that another writer will write the series, if ever. Logan previously revealed to Entertainment Weekly that his show is done when Vanessa is done.

While a "Penny Dreadful" season 4 is out of the picture, a fan can only hope for a spinoff with a writer that can match up to Logan.
