'Penny Dreadful' season 3 spoilers: Ethan and Dracula face off; finale to reveal Lily's tragic past

(Facebook/PennyDreadfulOnShowtime)Ethan and Dracula finally face off over Vanessa.

The long-awaited reunion between Vanessa, Ethan, and Sir Malcolm is finally on hand as "Penny Dreadful" begins to wrap up its third season run. But have the two men arrived too late to save Vanessa?

The previous episode saw Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) finally figuring out the truth lurking behind Dr. Sweet's (Christian Camargo) charm. But when she goes to confront Dracula, his impassioned speech pushes her into finally accepting her true nature as she offers her neck to the vampire.

The two-part finale of "Penny Dreadful" season 3 will undoubtedly find the characters dealing with the aftermath of their respective actions and decisions — from Vanessa accepting Dracula, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and Sir Malcolm's (Timothy Dalton) return, Dorian Gray's (Reeve Carney) betrayal of Lily (Billie Piper), and Victor Frankenstein's (Harry Treadaway) decision to change the erstwhile Brona Croft.

Episode 8 will find Ethan arriving in London with Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay (Wes Studi). While the gunslinger searches for their old ally, Frankenstein, Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone) will learn the truth about Renfield (Samuel Barnett). Meanwhile, Lily reveals to her captors her heartbreaking past.

A trailer for the upcoming episode, "Perpetual Night," teases the long-awaited confrontation between Vanessa's two lovers. The clip starts with a shot of the three men arriving in London. But it's a different city — deserted, dark, and covered with a thick fog. Vanessa is heard saying that "all light will end and the world will live in darkness." That warning appears to be coming true as Ethan is seen standing in the foggy street. A longer look at this particular scene shows Ethan looking around the dark street as he feels movement around him and hears someone singing. Dracula appears before him and comments that like the other creatures, Ethan is also one with the night. The two face off, with Ethan demanding to know where Vanessa is and threatening to shoot Dracula. He effortlessly lifts Ethan up by the neck and observes that the man really loves her. Ethan looks up and sees the full moon, but it's soon hidden by the clouds. Will these two mythical creatures fight?

The trailer also shows Dracula goading Ethan and telling him how Vanessa was left alone while he was wrestling with his demons. As he talks, viewers are given glimpses of Ethan fighting off Dracula's minions and being thrown off the second floor. A wolf's head dripping with blood is also shown, along with Sir Malcolm being branded by the creatures and Lily stabbing Dorian.

Showtime has not released a synopsis or a trailer for episode 9, the second half of the finale. The network clearly wants fans to enjoy the suspense, and if the finale is anything like the past two seasons, viewers are guaranteed to be in for an intense and exciting hour.

Episodes 8 and 9 of "Penny Dreadful" will air on Showtime on June 19 at 9 p.m.
