Jamie and Claire go to France to try and stop the battle of Culloden from happening. However, they will still be haunted by the memories of Black Jack.

A season 2 synopsis was shared by Den of Geek and it goes: "Season Two of Outlander begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful. Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising, and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it."

Season 1 ended on an emotionally heavy note which the characters will continue to carry through the next season. Actor Sam Heughhan and actress Caitriona Balfe, who play Jamie and Claire, respectively, shared the effects of season 1's scar with TV Guide.

Heughan said that Jamie may be physically healed but he will continue to battle with his mental and emotional trauma. On his road to recovery, he will need to have an internal sense of reconciliation after feeling he is less of a man and a husband to Claire.

Balfe adds that Claire will be affected by the things she has witnessed herself. She will somehow feel guilty for not being able to stop those things from happening. Claire, she said, will make sure that their mission to change the history of France will also serve as a tool for Jamie to take his mind off the memories that haunt him.

In an interview with Deadline, executive producer Ronald Moore revealed that they purposely restructured the end of season 1 from the book authored by Diana Gabaldon. In the book, Claire found out about the brutal experiences of her husbad from Jamie himself. They have decided for her to witness the events to heighten the sense of jeopardy, threat and the need to escape.

Moore also said that the second season will still be based on the second novel, "Dragonfly in Amber," but with added elements not found in the book. He also shared that the upcoming season has a whole different look from the previous one.

Portraits of returning casts and new characters have already been released. "Outlander" season 2 premieres on April 9.
