'Orange is the New Black' news: Director Andrew McCarthy reveals he has a special place in his heart for the show
It has only been a little over a month since the full season three of "Orange is the New Black" was released but already, fans of the show are wondering when the series would return for its fourth. This really comes as no surprise especially given how the finale ended with a massive cliffhanger.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), not a lot of information about the show's upcoming season has surfaced. The series is already in production but both cast and crew has kept mum on what is in store for Piper, Alex and the rest of the Litchfield women. Thankfully, while it does not have spoilers, a recent interview with a show insider can give fans a little bit of OITNB fix.
"Orange is the New Black," which first debuted two years ago in 2013, is a Netflix comedy-drama series based on the memoir "Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison" by Piper Kerman. The series follows Piper Chapman who was sent to federal prison for trafficking drugs 10 years prior with her then girlfriend, Alex Vause.
The show received universal positive reviews from both fans and critics alike. Not only did it garner an average of 94 percent on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, it was also revealed that the series generated more viewers on its first week than "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development." However, no one is more of a fan of the show than series director, Andrew McCarthy.
In an interview with McCarthy by Deadline, he gushed and said that out of all his directorial projects, he enjoys working on OITNB the most.
"I love all my children equally, but my head is totally in the Orange is the New Black world now. The blend of drama and comedy–they sneak up on you when you least expect it. It just sort of blends those two and you just have to ride that wave back and forth."
He then revealed his favourite episode, season two's "Low-Esteem City," which detailed Gloria's backstory.
"It's like you think know somebody, then you have these crazy flashbacks and think, 'Oh wow.' It's a bit like knowing someone, then suddenly they sit down and play piano and they play beautifully and you're like, 'Oh my God there's a whole other facet of this person I've never considered.' That's one of the wonderful things about the show."
No date has been set for the return of "Orange is the New Black." It is expected, however, that season four would premiere next year.
