'Once Upon a Time' season 5 news: Emma as the Dark Swan will be doing something bad to her loved ones; her family fight hard to save her
With the premiere of "Once Upon a Time" season five less than two weeks away, there's already been a lot of discussion on what will transpire. Through promo footage and interviews, fans are well aware that season five will be exploring the world of Camelot and that Emma will be exploring the darkness within her.
Fortunately, for diehard fans of the show that feel like two weeks is still a long way to go, more information about the upcoming season have come to light. It may be just enough to tide viewers over until the season premiere on Sept. 27.
Entertainment Weekly has just released the first official photos of season five. Executive producers, Adam Horowtiz and Edward Kitsis, have also revealed more juicy tidbits for the upcoming season.
The first half of season five will be exploring the theme of "love is a dangerous weapon."
The season four finale saw Emma being consumed by the Darkness. Now, when season five returns, Emma is freed from her role as Savior, and begins to transition to the role of the Dark One.
"She's a very motivated Dark One. There's a real driving force behind what she's doing and why, that we will unfurl. It's not like a rampant, uncontrollable evil that's been unleashed. Emma as a non-Dark One was a very smart person who did things for a reason, and I think that translates," Horowitz revealed.
As Emma Swan travels to another realm to deal with the Darkness, her loved ones are left back in Storybrooke, trying to deal with everything that has happened.
For the past four seasons, Emma, as the Savior, was the glue that united everyone together. Now that she is gone, there will be some disagreements and infighting within the heroes. Emotions are heightened as every one will have their own opinion on how to best help Emma.
Kitsis revealed that for the first time, Snow and Charming will find themselves disagreeing about how to save their daughter. "When you don't know how to save the child, it causes a lot of stress home," Kitsis added.
Snow and Charming will also be conflicted this season. Their main job is to protect the citizens of Storybrooke from danger, but now that their daughter is the villain, they will find themselves in a biased position.
Regina also finds herself in an awkward position. While Regina isn't exactly the new Savior, she owes Emma a lot, after she saved her from the Darkness. Regina will find herself challenged to take a more heroic role this season.
Hook will also be taking a more active role for the first 10 episodes. Hook will do anything to save Emma. "Hook has proclaimed his love for Emma – and he's not going to give up on her easily," Horowitz said. Also, as a parallel to what Emma is going through, Hook will also have to confront the darkness within him that he has tried suppress for the longest time.
When the Storybrooke characters finally meet with Emma in Camelot, it might not be all hugs and embraces. Emma will be doing something bad to the people she loves.
As Emma became the Dark Swan, she was able to explore her strengths, flaws and who she is "at her deepest levels." And it seems that at her deepest levels, there is still feelings of resentment about how her family may have wronged her.
"Once Upon a Time" returns for season five on Sept. 27, Sunday, 8/7 c on ABC.
