On the subject of Oculus Rift virtual reality headset's support for Mac computers, founder Palmer Luckey said it depends if Apple releases computers that would match the requirements needed for the VR headset to run.

Luckey told Shack News, "It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn't prioritize high-end GPUs. You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn't match our recommended spec." He added, "That is up to Apple and if they ever release a good computer we will do it."

Last January during Apple's quarterly earnings conference, CEO Tim Cook was asked about what the tech giant plans for the emerging market of virtual reality technology. According to The Verge, Cook said, "In terms of VR, I don't think it's a niche. It's really cool and has some interesting applications."

This year, three VR headset lines have landed in the tech industry, joining Oculus Rift are Sony PlayStation VR and the HTC Vive. Although it could be the start of another trend in the market, the mentioned VRs, however, require computers that have the muscle to render VR images.

According to CNet, Nvidia, giant graphics chips maker in the world said in a statement that unlike the usual 3D apps and games, the VR requires seven times graphics processing power.

Below are the PC requirements for the Oculus Rift VR:

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

The Oculus Rift can now be pre-ordered for $599, £499 or AU$649. It will be shipped on March 28.

Recently, Oculus introduced on their blog the first collectible card game (CCG) created for the Rift. The game, titled "Dragon Front," is a high fantasy with a touch of dieselpunk look.

The Rift, developed by Oculus VR, started as a Kickstart campaign that raised a crowdfund of $2.5 million.
