OCA Seminary Leader in Pennsylvania Resigns, Cites Focus on Diocese Work
The head of one of the three seminaries linked to the Orthodox Church in America has resigned after determining his other position leading a Pennsylvania diocese needed his full attention.
Archbishop Tikhon of the Diocese of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania, who served as rector of Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary said in a letter to the school dated August 1, that "changing and growing administrative needs for each institution were making it more difficult for one person to adequately address those needs."
The seminary is located in South Canaan Township, Penn.
"In prayerfully considering many factors, I have come to the conclusion that it is not possible for me to serve both the Diocese and the Seminary without compromising the stability and integrity of each institution," he wrote.
"The single and fundamental reason for my decision is the reality of the full time work required within the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania," he added.
The Archbishop, born Marc R. Mollard, said he would continue as a member of the seminary's Board of Trustees. Bishop Michael will serve as Interim Rector for the school. Bishop Michael has previously served as the seminary's Dean and as a professor.
"May the Lord Jesus Christ continue to strengthen you in your labors, your ministries and your studies within our sacred theological institution," he concluded.
Archbishop Tikkhon submitted a letter of resignation on April 25, 2012, and it was accepted by the church's leadership during the May 7-10 Spring Session of the Holy Synod.
