Nexus 6P release date rumors: phone seen with Snapdragon 820 chipset on Geekbench
Several rumors have surfaced about the upcoming Nexus line of smartphones from Google, even though the company usually releases them in October or November each year. The latest one about the Nexus smartphones for this year indicates that the name for one of them won't be changed.
Reporting on the latest rumor about the Nexus 6P, GizChina states that it was spotted on a benchmark site. However, since the Nexus 6P was the name used last year, it was surprising that Google plans to use the same one for the upcoming device. What is different about the new Nexus 6P on the Geekbench benchmark is that it has a Snapdragon 820 chipset on board.
Also, the operating system on the upcoming smartphone was revealed to be Android N on the listing. Both these clearly indicate that the device is not the Nexus 6P that released last year but a new device that could be releasing this year.
Earlier this week, there were rumors that HTC would be manufacturing two Nexus devices for Google this year and they would be named "Marlin" and "Sailfish." There were also contradicting rumors that indicate their names would be "M1" and "S1." The emergence of the latest rumor about the new Nexus 6P has added another dimension to the names being discussed on the Internet and it could refer to one of the devices from HTC.
However, some analysts are pointing out that since the rumors of this particular Nexus 6P have emerged earlier in the year, it could be released during the Google I/O 2016 event and be manufactured by Huawei. This particular event is due to take place during May 18-20, and if the Nexus 6P releases, it could just be an upgrade of last year's model with a better Snapdragon chipset and more RAM. Last year's model came with the problematic Snapdragon 810, but compared to this, the Snapdragon 820 is faster and stable. The increase of RAM to 4 GB will also bring the Nexus 6P at par with other flagship smartphones that come with the same amount.
