Microsoft Surface Phone news: Rumored device appears on benchmark site

For several months, rumors have pointed toward the arrival of a Microsoft Surface Phone but it was never released by the company, and many have since thought it was just a flight of fancy. However, a device running the Windows 10 Mobile operating system was recently seen passing through a benchmark site.

It was back in 2012 that rumors about the Microsoft Surface Phone started making the rounds and many thought it would finally be released this year. However, with the most recent Microsoft event having come and gone and only the Lumia 950 and the 950 XL smartphones arrived running Windows 10 Mobile, many formed the opinion that the project of a Surface phone was dead. Now, according to GSMArena, a device was spotted on benchmark site HTML5test and the listing indicates that it is a Microsoft Surface Phone and it is undergoing testing.

Microsoft already has a Surface line and devices in it can be used as tablet/laptop hybrids. It was with the release of the Surface Pro 3 that the company finally tasted success with the lineup and it has since then been copied by others companies like Apple, which released the iPad Pro. This year, Microsoft has been bolstered by the success of the Surface Pro 4 and even the Surface Book that comes with a physical keyboard. The Surface Book especially has been getting a lot of publicity and rave reviews even though it is a first generation device, as its design is revolutionary and allows for the physical keyboard to be detached and for the screen to be used as a tablet.

If the rumors about the Surface Phone are true, it could mean that Microsoft is finally moving forward with the product and creating a unique device. Many industry pundits believe that the company could create a mini tablet cum phone and it would run the Windows 10 Mobile operating system.
