Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date: 4K resolution to be offered as upgrade; laptop hybrid to launch in 2017

(Microsoft)The Microsoft Surface Pro 4's (pictured) successor may sport a Kaby Lake processor.

There is still no news from Microsoft about the impending release of the Surface Pro 5. The laptop hybrid's details are being kept a secret, but a new leak claims that the device may come with a 4K Ultra HD display.

It was previously reported that the Surface Pro 5 could be seen with either a 2K or 4K display resolution. However, reports are now claiming that both may be featured. According to hearsays, a 2K display screen may come with the standard version of the upcoming hybrid and a 4K display may be offered as an upgrade. Regardless, if the device does end up with a 4K resolution, then it will mark the first in the lineup to have achieved such a feat.

However, a much-awaited release date is yet to be announced. It is unknown why Microsoft is choosing to keep mum on the launch date of the device, but it has been said that there may be certain factors that have delayed it.

One such factor has to do with the Surface Pro 5's alleged processor. Unlike the previous iteration of the device, the Surface Pro 5 is believed to arrive with Intel's latest seventh-generation Kaby Lake processor. According to reports, the Kaby Lake processor is leagues better than Intel's previous offering, the Skylake processor. These same reports have said that the new processor has improved performance and may even be beneficial for battery life.

Rumor has it that the Kaby Lake processor will not be released until late 2016 or early 2017, effectively pushing back the launch date of the Surface Pro 5 to next year.

Additionally, the next iteration in the Surface Pro lineup is expected to come with the second-generation USB 3.1 ports and run on the Windows 10 OS update, Redstone 2.

Since these are just rumors, though, tech enthusiasts should take this news with a grain of salt.
