While millions of fans and fellow racers pray for Michael Schumacher's recovery, so far his recuperation process has been gradual, with only a few signs indicating some cognitive functioning.

Express reports that, despite the piling medical costs, which so far amounts to more than £10million, his wife Corinna and children are still hopeful of his recovery. His family has ordered a total media blackout, with tents erected so that paparazzi are blocked when Schumacher goes outside on his wheelchair. With limited awareness and inability to walk, the recovery process has been painfully slow for Michael Schumacher.

He receives round the clock medical care with the help of a 15 member medical team led by Professor Jean-Francois Payen. Payen also operated on Schumacher's blood clots in his brain after the devastating accident on the French Alps in December 2013.

Peter Hamlyn, a consultant neurological and spinal surgeon, told Express that progress is uncertain and slow. It will take years for Schumacher to make a significant recovery. The professor questioned the quality of survival and said that "It's a rollercoaster and if Michael Schumacher's rollercoaster takes him and his family somewhere happy then they will have been to places that will have been pretty unhappy on the way there."

However, many people have come to admire the strength and willpower of Schumacher's wife, Corinna, during this troubling time. Information on his recovery is limited, with only reports of his progress available from second-hand accounts of reliable sources who have visited him.

Schumacher's Swiss home has been converted into a rehabilitation center and special clinic. He is massaged for several hours every day in order to stimulate muscle mass and blood flow. Air Herald reports that there is a strict vigil on the media's presence near Michael after a reporter, dressed as a priest, stole his medical reports. Schumacher's wife and children have stayed by his side, with Corinna managing the household while keeping hope of his recovery. Inducing Schumacher in a coma saved his life as he had sustained severe injuries and would have died had he succumbed to them.
