Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' news: Tilda Swinton confirms her role as the Ancient One
"Doctor Strange" is still in the early stages of production and while Marvel fans are still reeling from the announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the Sorcerer Supreme, another favorable casting news is sure to put comic book and Marvel fans in a tizzy.
Oscar-winning actress, Tilda Swinton, whose credits include "The Chronicles Of Narnia," has confirmed she will be joining the star-studded cast of "Doctor Strange." The 54-year-old actress confirmed the news to Screen Crush after months of speculation that the stellar actress was playing a key role in the upcoming Marvel movie.
Excited about her confirmed role in the blockbuster movie, Swinton told the publication, "I'm a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I'm really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what's done in this particular world... The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling."
Swinton is set to play the Ancient One, a wizened sorcerer who quickly becomes a mentor to Stephen Strange. The Ancient One, as per the comic book, has many extraordinary abilities, some of which include creating illusions, levitating and teleportation. However, this is Marvel's most diverse casting since the original Ancient One in the comic book is an old man with Tibetan ancestry.
Swinton's career spans 30 years and includes working in a mix of independent and big-budget films. She has portrayed a diverse set of roles that include classic feminine ones to edgier androgynous roles.
Tilda Swinton is neither Asian nor male, so it seems Marvel is looking to modernize and spruce up the original "Doctor Strange" story. The Ancient One was not only a mentor to Doctor Strange but was also the mentor of Strange's nemesis Baron Mordo. Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is slated to play the antagonist Mordo, reports The Independent.
"Doctor Strange" is scheduled to release on Nov. 4, 2016.
