Fans of open world action-adventure video games have something to look forward to as "Mafia 3" will reportedly be released this year.

It has been years since "Mafia" fans had a new game to play, but now it seems developer Hanger 13 and publisher 2K Games are ready to roll out this highly anticipated game.

According to Game Zone, "Mafia 3" will be set in 1968 New Orleans and will revolve around Lincoln Clay. The biracial Clay was orphaned as a child and grew up to become a Vietnam veteran. He reportedly found a family and a home in the mob. But when his new family is betrayed and slaughtered by the Italian mob, the hardened soldier starts his own criminal organization and plots his revenge. However, there's no news at this time how Clay's story line will relate to the previous installations' story arcs.

Lincoln Clay will reportedly be brought to life by actor Alex Hernandez. Segment Next reported that the "Hemlock Grove" star has already done some motion-capture sessions for the game.

Gamers already have some idea how "Mafia 3's" gameplay will roll out, based on a short teaser that 2K Games unveiled in last year's Gamescom. The truncated clip basically showed the usual game mechanics of third-person shooters. Aside from using weapons, players can also engage in stealth tactics and use a cover system, wherein players utilize objects to escape enemy gunfire. Of course, the game developers will undoubtedly have other unique features and modes.

While "Mafia 3" was teased last year, no specific release date has been revealed yet. However, IGN reported earlier this year that the game might be released on April 26. The date was allegedly based on a Best Buy pre-order card for the game. 2K games has neither confirmed nor denied the date. But the game publisher did release a statement that "Mafia 3" will be released in 2016. It also addressed the pre-order date and said it was common for retailers to give a placeholder date even if no official roll-out date has been given.
