With the MacBook Air sharing similarities with the more recently released MacBook laptop, there have been rumors that Apple will be retiring the MacBook Air. However, according to Mac Rumors, Apple is on track to release updated MacBook Air models sometime during the third-quarter of 2016.

Reports indicate that Apple is planning to introduce the new MacBook Air laptops during the 2016 Worldwide Developers Conference taking place this June. According to Apple Insider, Apple will be not be releasing a new 11-inch variant but will instead release 13-inch and 15-inch variants of the new MacBook Air.

In terms of design, the MacBook Air will retain its svelte design but may come with an even thinner chassis. Upgrades will be focused on the laptops hardware.

It is almost certain that the 2016 MacBook Air laptops will be powered by the latest sixth-generation Intel Skylake processors.

Specifically, the MacBook Air is compatible with the Intel Core i5-6360U, i5-6260U, i7-6650U and i7-6560 U processors. The lower spec'd MacBook Air may ship with the Intel Core i5 while the higher end MacBook Air will come with Intel Core i7 processors.

Intel's newest processors come with faster CPU speeds, enhanced graphics, more efficient use of power and a longer battery life. The new Intel Skylake processor will provide significantly improved performance compared to the current model's Intel Broadwell chips.

The new MacBook Air laptops will also come preloaded with the newest El Capitan operating system.

Apple is also rumored to equip the MacBook Air laptops with the Touch ID feature. With a fingerprint scanner, users will be able to secure files and use Apple Pay for online transactions. The Touch ID feature may be embedded on the Track Pad, which is also rumored to get Force Touch technology.

The Worldwide Developers Conference will most likely take place from June 13 to 17, 2016. While Apple has yet to confirm its lineup, the tech giant will most likely use the event to unveil some of their newest products. Stay tuned for the latest Apple news and updates.
