Lea Michele leaves 'Scream Queens,' joins cast of new ABC comedy
Lea Michele, best known for her role as Rachel Berry on "Glee," is leaving horror comedy series "Scream Queens," where she plays Hester Ulrich, having signed up for a yet-unnamed ABC comedy series.
The comedy follows the story of Courtney, played by Brandon Michael Hall, an optimistic but struggling rapper who runs for mayor as a publicity stunt to generate attention for the mixtape he made — and finds himself winning the elections.
No word yet has been given about Michele's role in the comedy series, which is currently in the process of shooting its first episode. However, it is expected to be a major role, considering that she will be giving up "Scream Queens" for this. Her character is tailor-fit for her, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is rumored that she will play the chief-of-staff of Hall's character.
Fans are hoping that the new series will feature Michele's singing prowess, given that Daveed Diggs of "Hamilton" is the executive producer of the yet-unnamed show, along with Jamie Tarses, Scott Stuber, and James Griffiths. Jeremy Bronson of "The Mindy Project" is writing the script.
This marks the first TV project that Michele has outside the tutelage of Ryan Murphy, the producer of both "Glee" and "Scream Queens." Reports say that Murphy released her from her current series so she can join the cast of the ABC comedy.
"Scream Queens" has not been renewed yet for a third season. However, should the show be given a green light, the storyline will progress without Michele's character, fueling speculations that Hester will be killed in the show. However, reports indicate that it is unlikely for "Scream Queens" to push through with a third season.
Michele will also be appearing in "Dimension 404," a sci-fi anthology series on Hulu. She is currently working on her album, titled "Places." This will be her second album, following "Louder," which was released in 2014.
