There was a time that Netflix held sole dominion over video streaming. Now the service is facing competition against sites like Kickass Torrents, thanks in large part to Torrents Time.

Torrents Time is a plug-in that allows sites to stream videos even without a torrent client. The browser plug-in made a huge splash when The Pirate Bay used it, followed quickly by Kickass Torrents.

With Torrents Time in place, Kickass Torrents users easily streamed the videos and music they wanted as the plug-in worked on various browsers and even had subtitle support.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before various individuals and organizations worked to take down Torrents Time. The first to take a shot at Torrents Time was the anti-piracy group BREIN.

Torrent Freak reported that the Dutch group issued a cease and desist letter after asserting that the software is illegal. BREIN's General Counsel, Pieter Haringsma, wrote that as the plug-in is "primarily engaged in the facilitating, enabling and participating in the making available of infringing files," it is illegal and unlawful based on the laws of The Netherlands.

IB Times reported that aside from the Dutch anti-piracy group, security researcher Andrew Sampson also took aim at Torrents Time and revealed that it contains a Trojan that would allow hackers to track users or force them to stream torrents they might not like. Another security researcher, Slipstream, also reported something similar.

Torrents Time acknowledged the worrying security breaches and had already released a patch to fix it. But as for BREIN's demands, the company fired off its own legal letter that denied the allegations and even demanded the anti-piracy group to withdraw their claims.

However, it's unlikely that BREIN will back down, as the company has been very determined to shut down sites like Kickass Torrents. The company has even targeted numerous Kickass users who are prolific uploaders, successfully obtaining court orders to get these individuals to stop their activities.
