'Homeland' season 6 spoilers: New season to show how Carrie was recruited to the CIA?

Although specific plot details for the sixth season of "Homeland" are still being kept under wraps, it is possible that the upcoming season will provide a glimpse of Carrie Matheson before she was recruited to the CIA.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Alex Gansa revealed interest in possibly exploring Carrie's history and how her brilliance and capabilities led to her being recruited by Saul Berenson.

"Clearly she came to the attention of Saul Berenson probably through a professor at some university who picked her out as somebody who was incredibly perceptive and acute about human behavior, somebody who had a razor-sharp mind and somebody who could thrive in the duplicitous role of intelligence work overseas," said Gansa.

Following Carrie's journey over the past five seasons, viewers have seen how much she has changed. In fact, in the recently concluded fifth season, Carrie even left the CIA to live out a civilian life. Dramatizing Carrie's beginnings as a CIA agent could serve to provide a stark contrast to her disillusioned state in season 5.

The upcoming season will see "Homeland" feature a domestic storyline — focusing on New York City and its surrounding areas. Unfortunately, specific story details have not yet been revealed. Whatever the storyline might be, actor Mandy Patinkin hopes that the upcoming season will continue to depict relevant storylines that mirror actual events happening today.

"I hope it goes somewhere that makes a profound statement about something broken in this world that in our fictional viewpoint, we might have a suggestion on how to set it right," said Patinkin.

Many "Homeland" fans are wondering whether the upcoming season would focus on the current presidential elections. On the other hand, the focus on New York City could also lead the show to focus on terrorist-related storylines that have ties to the 9/11 attack.

Season 6 of "Homeland" will return to Showtime this October.
