'Gravity Rush 2' release date, news: 'Overture' links events between Vita and PS4 title; Raven DLC announced

(YouTube/ PlayStation EU)"Gravity Rush: Overture" bridges the gap between the end of the PS Vita title and the upcoming sequel to be released on the PS4.

The gravity-defying skills of the so-called gravity queen Kat and her ally Raven are set to astound and amaze in "Gravity Rush 2" when it comes out early next year. Before the momentous event, Sony Interactive Entertainment America, in partnership with Japan Studio, has prepared some pleasant surprises for the fans.

In efforts to create a cohesive storyline, "Gravity Rush: Overture" has been released, connecting events from the first game to the upcoming sequel on the PlayStation 4. The animation is produced by Studio Khara, the same company behind "Rebuild of Evangelion."

The two-part anime consists of elements that make other series like "Naruto Shippuden" and "One Piece" an instant hit, presenting the main character as a carefree, innocent individual that loves to indulge in the simple joys of life. Kat's funny demeanor and Raven's serious disposition, coupled with kickass fight sequences, hook both first-timers and Vita fans of the title.

Creating a separate medium that aims to complete a certain game is not new in today's era of gaming. "Final Fantasy 15" has the five-part animated series "Brotherhood" and the CGI-filled film "Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15" to create a backstory without the need to incorporate the said events in the actual gameplay.

Aside from the "Overture," a free DLC has been announced prior to the game's release. "The Ark of Time – Raven's Choice" will be made available in March 2017, which will feature Raven as presumably the playable character. The DLC's story tackles the occurrences where Raven tries to save the abducted orphans who were trapped inside the ark at the end of the first "Gravity Rush."

To further give consumers the chance to think about getting the game, Sony Computer Entertainment of America associate project manager Nick Accordino announced that the demo has been made available on the PlayStation Store since Dec. 22. This allows gamers to try out Kat's gravity styles and experience the actual gameplay.

"Gravity Rush 2" will be dropping exclusively into PlayStation 4 platforms on Jan. 20, 2017.
