'Gotham' season 3 spoilers: Poison Ivy to be recast; series to return in September

"Gotham" season 3 will take on a more political tone, as old alliances are broken and new ones are made.
"Gotham" fans received some happy news from Fox as the network recently released its fall lineup. The popular crime TV series is set to return on Sept. 19 and will reportedly be aired in two parts, with the first 11 episodes airing this year and the last half in the spring of 2017.
According to the network, the third season of "Gotham" will continue with its origin story. However, the stakes are higher than ever as more deprived and ambitious Super Villains are introduced and new alliances fight for control over the city.
The upcoming season will also see the return of an older and badder Poison Ivy, with a new actress set to portray her. Ivy Pepper, the plant-loving orphan, was originally played by Clare Foley. However, casting is currently underway for an actress to take on the role of the teenage eco-terrorist.
Poison Ivy isn't the only new villain set to be introduced (or reintroduced, in her case). "Gotham" showrunner John Stephens previously teased that viewers will be seeing the Mad Hatter, the Tweedle brothers, Talon and Solomon Grundy, next season. For those unfamiliar with these villains, the Mad Hatter, aka Dr. Jervis Tetch, is a scientist who uses mind-control over his victims. The Tweedle brothers are very strong twins, while Solomon Grundy is a reanimated corpse. On the other hand, Talon is a formidable enemy, an assassin working for the Court of Owls.
The arrival of these villains will definitely keep Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the Gotham City Police Force on their toes. However, they might also have to contend with the political aspect of the city. Cory Michael Smith, who plays Edward Nygma, mentioned in the Italian magazine Cinefilos that the series reflects what is happening in society. And with the United States preparing for one of the most important elections in its history, "even Gotham will address in parallel the issue." It's unclear how the show will address this, though, but with the city without a mayor, it's possible that either a new leader takes over the reins of Gotham or someone will be making a power grab.
Luckily, the wait isn't all that long now that "Gotham" season 3 is set to premiere on Sept. 19.
